22 June 2015 – ITG attended the “LIFE Best Project Awards” ceremony, held annually in Brussels, to accept the award recognizing WIZ as one of the 8 best environmental projects in Europe. Before obtaining this award, it was one of the 25 projects selected from a total of 102 candidates.

This award recognizes the work carried out over the last years in Water Technologies and encourages us to continue developing our strategy.

One of the keys to the success of WIZ in Spain was the participation and strong involvement of the Pontevedra Provincial Council.

The WIZ – WaterIZe spatial planning project was approved by the European Commission as part of the LIFE+ initiative at the end of the year 2010, in the Environmental Politics and Governance category, and had a budget of 2,445,207.00 euros to achieve its goal of improving the management of drinking water and urban planning-related processes in an environment of climate change and urban development.

The partnership consisted of Italian institutions (Acque Spa, Acque Ingegneria Srl and Autorità di Bacino del Fiume Arno) and ITG as the only Spanish representative.

""

Pilot scenarios

The technologies developed as part of the project were successfully tested in ten Italian towns and one Spanish town. In the town chosen as the pilot scenario in Spain, Baiona, it was possible to develop and implement a specific software called WIZ4ALL, which provides data necessary to manage drinking water in a way that is practical and transparent for citizens, management companies and Administrations in places with an increasing population or a high number of tourists or places affected by climate change.

""It provides data on the quantity and quality of drinking water in the town concerned, the economic and environmental costs of the water supply process, the potential for savings related to the town’s supply infrastructure or whether new water-intensive leisure centers may be created, whether the possibility of exploiting new water resources should be considered, whether the network should be renovated, whether new standards should be set to rationalize consumption, whether the drinking water supply can be guaranteed and for how long if rainfall decreases or temperatures rise, etc.

In short, it is a GIS-based web platform designed to improve the management of drinking water supplies, covering environmental and energy saving-related aspects through the computerization of the supply network and the step-by-step monitoring of said network to detect any incidents accurately and quickly.

It has been developed entirely by ITG thanks to its experience in Information Systems that allow users to access interactive maps with georeferenced information, analyze information, edit it and present the results of these operations for the purpose of resolving complex planning and management issues.
