The ITG and the Galician Business in the ENERBIOLOG group present the results of their innovation to the Forest Biomass sector

Dec 14th ’18 – EENERBIOLOG is an acronym for an innovative project promoted by a group of Galician Businesses and the ITG (Galician Institute of Technology) to attain high-quality solid biofuel, and ease its consumption with minimum economic and environmental cost. All with the support of innovative logistic formats and the application of monitoring and control techniques in real-time.

The intelligent manufacturing and the innovative logistic of forest biomass used as energy, is a challenge approached by the ITG and the companies Greenalia, Indutec and Biomasa Forestal for the last two years

The results were presented to experts in the field during an open-day meeting that took place in Sigüeiro, near Santiago de Compostela

Greanalia Forest, leader of the Forestry Sector in the Iberian Peninsula, as part of the Greenalia Group, leads this project in cooperation with the ITG and Greenalia Woodchips, Biomasa Forestal and Indutec Engineers.

By means of intelligent manufacturing, ENERBIOLOG optimizes the processes throughout the value chain of elaboration of forestal biomass with an energetic purpose to produce quality solid biofuels. The improvements in the processes of density and reduction of humidity of the biomass, as well as control and maintenance techniques in real-time, which were introduced by the system developed, allows the production of a quality solid biofuel with minimal cost.

This has been achieved by the use of innovative systems of densification and packaging during the production of biofuels, as well as the automatization of humidity control and drying process of wood chips, and an intelligent system of energy consumption.

Results

The Greenalia Woodchip drying plant in Sigüeiro (A Coruña) was chosen to present an open-day to show the results of the ENERBIOLOG project on November 30th. It was open to all experts of the forestry and biomass industry, and it displayed the accomplishments in certain areas, such as: logistic format related to densification and packaging of the wood chip in pellets; intelligent labeling system; monitoring process of more than 1,300 energetic variables with an innovative management system; the engineering of the drying process to determine the proper parameters with more accuracy.

This system was developed between February 2016 and November 2018 and it was sponsored by GAIN (Galician Agency for Innovation) and co-financed at 80% by the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER), backed by the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Industry, through the program ConectaPeme of local government (Xunta de Galicia).
