Description

R5DES is a strategic alliance formed by ITE, CIDETEC, IKERLAN, ITG and TEKNIKER to address the challenge of accelerating the transformation of the energy system towards a digital, distributed, decarbonised, decentralised and dynamic model. This will be achieved through the collaborative development of advanced solutions in forecasting, digitalisation, storage, distributed control, cybersecurity, intelligent operation and the integration of distributed energy resources into electricity distribution networks, thereby strengthening technological leadership in smart grids and facilitating the transfer of knowledge to industry, utilities and public administrations.

Among the innovations to be undertaken by ITG are the construction of a testbed for hybrid energy‑storage systems; the application of quantum algorithms to energy optimisation and cybersecurity; the development of ultra‑precise, very short‑term forecasting algorithms for voltage and frequency control; algorithms supporting innovative business models based on flexibility and local energy markets; the creation of a data space for testing business models and interoperability; and the development of energy and power management algorithms for virtual power plants, including congestion identification and anomaly prediction.

Thanks to the combined critical mass of the partners—bringing together more than one thousand researchers, unique infrastructures and extensive industrial experience—R5DES is positioned as a national engine of innovation for the digitalisation, decarbonisation and modernisation of the Spanish electricity system.

Objectives:

  • Generate capabilities and technologies that enhance network operation in the face of critical events, new demand patterns and decentralised generation, through applied research and collaboration, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the Spanish energy sector as an international benchmark.
  • Achieve more efficient, secure and resilient networks capable of integrating distributed generation and flexible demand, reducing losses and costs while creating opportunities for innovation, employment and industrial development.
  • Act as a collaborative environment of excellence to attract talent, develop impactful technological solutions and position Spain at the forefront of smart grids, consolidating the adoption of advanced technologies that enable a more resilient, flexible, digital and sustainable electricity system.
