CORMORÁN

Navigation system for precision landings of hybrid VTOL/fixed-wing drones

Category Regional
Sectors Aerospace and Drone
Execution Period 2024 - 2026
Funding Xunta de Galicia - Civil UAVs Initiative

Description

Within the framework of the Cormorán project, ITG is developing an onboard navigation system based on image processing and Artificial Intelligence, designed to enable precision landings for hybrid VTOL/fixed-wing aircraft. The result will be a device operating as a payload, compatible with multiple autopilots, providing the navigation data required to perform precision landings in different scenarios.

The system adapts and enhances ITG’s previous technology for multirotor aircraft, integrating computer vision, sensor fusion, and altitude sensors.

Thanks to this technology, Cormorán will be able to:

  • Perform precise and autonomous landings, even during night operations.
  • Land safely on moving ships.
  • Automatically detect safe zones for emergency landings.

All navigation data is integrated with the autopilot and transmitted to the ground control station (GCS) for real-time monitoring and tracking.

Objectives:

  • Develop an onboard navigation system for precision landings in different operational environments.
  • Ensure safe landings during night operations and on moving platforms such as ships.
  • Enable automatic identification of safe emergency landing zones.
  • Integrate the system with the autopilot and the ground control station for real-time telemetry and monitoring.
