Adapting to climate change through forest fire prevention

Category International
Sectors Forestry
Execution Period 2021 - 2022
Funding European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) - Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal Program (POCTEP)

Description

Adaptation to climate change through prevention and management of landscapes exposed to large forest fires (LFFs) in cross-border rural areas.

To achieve this objective, the following activities will be carried out:

  • Identification of the SMZs to minimize the risk of large forest fires in the pilot areas: characterization of the SMZ and modeling of the actions to be carried out on the vegetation to reduce the structural risk of LFF.
  • Study of historical fires together with a landscape-scale risk analysis to identify these areas and analysis of the existence of enclaves and uses for their sustainability, analysis of the impact of climate change on the risk of fires and its effects on the surroundings of La Raya in the coming decades.
  • Generation of cartography with quantitative and qualitative identification of the SMZs at landscape scale, which will allow their integration by the public-private managers involved.
  • Implementation of an experimental plan for comprehensive preventive management in each pilot zone, which will include the promotion of agroforest, pasturing and forest biomass uses.
  • Recovery of the diverse, inhabited landscape with less risk of large fires.
  • Analysis of biomass density, characteristics and status in the pilot areas, promotion of adapted treatments and promotion of the exploitation of forest biomass as a source of applied employment.
  • Integration of local agents, administration and affected owners, residents and companies to lay the foundations for the development of a Circular Green Economy.
  • Design of a participatory fire prevention strategy based on agricultural, livestock and forestry activities that recover a diverse, inhabited landscape with less risk of fires.

Development of joint preventive planning in La Raya area of the project’s NUTS III regions.
